"Joint" Health Awareness

In this segment we would be delighted to guide you about how you can take better care of your knee. We will give you a brief overview of Knee Structure, Its Diseases and their Prevention

The knee joint joins the thigh with the leg and consists of two articulations: one between the femur and tibia, and one between the femur and patella. It is the largest joint in the human body. The knee joint is vulnerable to both acute injury and the development of osteoarthritis.

Knee Anatomy
There are 3 bones participating in Knee Anatomy.
Femur (Thigh Bone)
§ Tibia (Leg Bone)
§ Patella (Knee Cap)
The ends of the bone forming the knee joint are covered by Cartilage called Articular Cartilage. This is a smooth shining structure which has no nerve supply. That means the cartilage give us smooth gliding movements without pain. Between the two major bones i.e. Femur & Tibia, there are two more structures called Menisci. A meniscus is moon shaped structure which acts as a cushion or shock absorber when the knee is loaded.
Femur & Tibia are connected to each other through strong cord like structures called Ligaments. There are 6 major ligaments in Knee.
  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
  •  Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)
  • Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL)
  • Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL)
  • Patellofemoral Ligament (PFL)
  • Posterolateral Corner (PLC)
Function of the Ligaments is to give stability to the knee joint in a way that movements are possible but within certain limits.
Knee function can be deranged by various conditions like :
  •  Acute Conditions
  •  Chronic Conditions
1.       Fractures
2.       Ligament Injuries
3.       Meniscal Tear
4.       Infection
1.       Osteoarthritis (OA)
2.       Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
3.       Gout

Tips for Bone Health

  • Increase your physical activity. Do at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, such as walking.
  • Vitamin D3 is necessary for absorption of calcium into bone matrix.
  • People who are physically inactive have a higher risk of osteoporosis than do their more-active counterparts.
  • A diet low in calcium contributes to diminished bone density, early bone loss and an increased risk of fractures
