MPFL Reconstruction

45 years old lady from model town (new Delhi) had a fall 3 months back. She sustained injury left knee. After some time she was able to walk normally but all activities involving 30 to 40 degree were painful and restricted (like squatting, sitting on floor ….etc.).
On examination, Dr. Ashwani Maichand & Team found that her knee cap (Patella) was slipping to the lateral side of the knee when she was trying to bend beyong 30 degree. MRI was done and it was diagnosed as MPFL Tear (Medial Patello-Femoral Ligament). MPFL is a strong ligament attached to patella. It maintains the proper tracking of patella on femur while bending the knee. Once the MPFL is torn, the patella tracking is imbalanced and patella tends to dislocate laterally.
As it was a long standing case, we had to first do a lateral release and then reconstructed a new MPFL using patient’s hamstring muscle. The knee movements were started within 4 hours of surgery to avoid stiffness. Patient was kept on CPM (Continous Passive Motion) machine for 2 days to assist initial movements.
At the time of discharge, the range of movement of Knee was 0 to 90 degree, patient was able to walk normally and could sit on chair comfortable.
